`hir::AssocItem` currently has a boolean `fn_has_self_parameter` field, which is misplaced, because it's only relevant for associated fns, not for associated consts or types. This commit moves it (and renames it) to the `AssocKind::Fn` variant, where it belongs. This requires introducing a new C-style enum, `AssocTag`, which is like `AssocKind` but without the fields. This is because `AssocKind` values are passed to various functions like `find_by_ident_and_kind` to indicate what kind of associated item should be searched for, and having to specify `has_self` isn't relevant there. New methods: - Predicates `AssocItem::is_fn` and `AssocItem::is_method`. - `AssocItem::as_tag` which converts `AssocItem::kind` to `AssocTag`. Removed `find_by_name_and_kinds`, which is unused. `AssocItem::descr` can now distinguish between methods and associated functions, which slightly improves some error messages.

Remove the use of Rayon iterators This removes the use of Rayon iterators and the use of the `rustc-rayon` crate. `rustc-rayon-core` is still used however. In parallel loops, instead of a Rayon iterator a serial iterator are used to collect items into a `Vec` and we use a parallel loop over its elements using the new `par_slice` function which is built on `rustc-rayon-core`'s `join`. This change makes it easier to bring `rustc-rayon-core` in-tree. Introduce `-Zembed-metadata` to allow omitting full metadata from rlibs and dylibs This is a continuation of https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/120855 (I was mentored by `@bjorn3` to move it forward). Most of the original code was written by bjorn3, I tried to clean it up a bit and add some documentation and tests. This PR introduces a new unstable compiler flag called `-Zembed-metadata=[no|yes]`, with the default being `yes` (see https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/57076 for context). When set to `no`, rustc will only store a small metadata stub inside rlibs/dylibs instead of the full metadata, to keep their size smaller. It should be used in combination with `--emit=metadata`, so that the users of such a compiled library can still read the metadata from the corresponding `.rmeta` file. [This comment](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/120855#issuecomment-1937018169) shows an example of binary/artifact size wins that can be achieved using this approach. Contrary to https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/120855, this PR only introduces the new flag, along with a couple of run-make tests and documentation, but does not yet use it in bootstrap to actually compile rustc. I plan to do that as a follow-up step (along with integration in Cargo, which should ideally just always pass this flag to reduce the size of target directories). `ast::Item` has an `ident` field. - It's always non-empty for these item kinds: `ExternCrate`, `Static`, `Const`, `Fn`, `Mod`, `TyAlias`, `Enum`, `Struct`, `Union`, `Trait`, `TraitAlias`, `MacroDef`, `Delegation`. - It's always empty for these item kinds: `Use`, `ForeignMod`, `GlobalAsm`, `Impl`, `MacCall`, `DelegationMac`. There is a similar story for `AssocItemKind` and `ForeignItemKind`. Some sites that handle items check for an empty ident, some don't. This is a very C-like way of doing things, but this is Rust, we have sum types, we can do this properly and never forget to check for the exceptional case and never YOLO possibly empty identifiers (or possibly dummy spans) around and hope that things will work out. The commit is large but it's mostly obvious plumbing work. Some notable things. - `ast::Item` got 8 bytes bigger. This could be avoided by boxing the fields within some of the `ast::ItemKind` variants (specifically: `Struct`, `Union`, `Enum`). I might do that in a follow-up; this commit is big enough already. - For the visitors: `FnKind` no longer needs an `ident` field because the `Fn` within how has one. - In the parser, the `ItemInfo` typedef is no longer needed. It was used in various places to return an `Ident` alongside an `ItemKind`, but now the `Ident` (if present) is within the `ItemKind`. - In a few places I renamed identifier variables called `name` (or `foo_name`) as `ident` (or `foo_ident`), to better match the type, and because `name` is normally used for `Symbol`s. It's confusing to see something like `foo_name.name`.

Note: the `FIXME` comment in `is_unwrap_or_empty_symbol` is removed. It actually should have been removed in #138482, the precursor to this PR. That can be done later. - Lots of assertions are added to item lowering to ensure that identifiers are empty/non-empty as expected. These will be removable when `ast::Item` is done later. - `ItemKind::Use` doesn't get an `Ident`, but `UseKind::Single` does. - `lower_use_tree` is significantly simpler. No more confusing `&mut Ident` to deal with. - `ItemKind::ident` is a new method, it returns an `Option<Ident>`. It's used with `unwrap` in a few places; sometimes it's hard to tell exactly which item kinds might occur. None of these unwraps fail on the test suite. It's conceivable that some might fail on alternative input. We can deal with those if/when they happen. - In `trait_path` the `find_map`/`if let` is replaced with a loop, and things end up much clearer that way. - `named_span` no longer checks for an empty name; instead the call site now checks for a missing identifier if necessary. - `maybe_inline_local` doesn't need the `glob` argument, it can be computed in-function from the `renamed` argument. - `arbitrary_source_item_ordering::check_mod` had a big `if` statement that was just getting the ident from the item kinds that had one. It could be mostly replaced by a single call to the new `ItemKind::ident` method. - `ItemKind` grows from 56 to 64 bytes, but `Item` stays the same size, and that's what matters, because `ItemKind` only occurs within `Item`.

metadata: Ignore sysroot when doing the manual native lib search in rustc This is the opposite alternative to https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/138170 and another way to make native library search consistent between rustc and linker. This way the directory list searched by rustc is still a prefix of the directory list considered by linker, but it's a shorter prefix than in #138170. We can include the sysroot directories into rustc's search again later if the issues with #138170 are resolved, it will be a backward compatible change. This may break some code doing weird things on unstable rustc, or tier 2-3 targets, like bundling `libunwind.a` or sanitizers into something. Note that this doesn't affect shipped `libc.a`, because it lives in `self-contained` directories in sysroot, and `self-contained` sysroot is already not included into the rustc's search. All libunwind and sanitizer libs should be moved to `self-contained` sysroot too eventually. With the consistent search directory list between rustc and linker we can make rustc own the native library search (at least for static libs) and use linker search only as a fallback (like in #123436). This will allow addressing issues like https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/132394 once and for all on all targets. r? ``@bjorn3``
