2014-12-29std: Second pass stabilization for `comm`Alex Crichton-1/+1
This commit is a second pass stabilization for the `std::comm` module, performing the following actions: * The entire `std::comm` module was moved under `std::sync::mpsc`. This movement reflects that channels are just yet another synchronization primitive, and they don't necessarily deserve a special place outside of the other concurrency primitives that the standard library offers. * The `send` and `recv` methods have all been removed. * The `send_opt` and `recv_opt` methods have been renamed to `send` and `recv`. This means that all send/receive operations return a `Result` now indicating whether the operation was successful or not. * The error type of `send` is now a `SendError` to implement a custom error message and allow for `unwrap()`. The error type contains an `into_inner` method to extract the value. * The error type of `recv` is now `RecvError` for the same reasons as `send`. * The `TryRecvError` and `TrySendError` types have had public reexports removed of their variants and the variant names have been tweaked with enum namespacing rules. * The `Messages` iterator is renamed to `Iter` This functionality is now all `#[stable]`: * `Sender` * `SyncSender` * `Receiver` * `std::sync::mpsc` * `channel` * `sync_channel` * `Iter` * `Sender::send` * `Sender::clone` * `SyncSender::send` * `SyncSender::try_send` * `SyncSender::clone` * `Receiver::recv` * `Receiver::try_recv` * `Receiver::iter` * `SendError` * `RecvError` * `TrySendError::{mod, Full, Disconnected}` * `TryRecvError::{mod, Empty, Disconnected}` * `SendError::into_inner` * `TrySendError::into_inner` This is a breaking change due to the modification of where this module is located, as well as the changing of the semantics of `send` and `recv`. Most programs just need to rename imports of `std::comm` to `std::sync::mpsc` and add calls to `unwrap` after a send or a receive operation. [breaking-change]
2014-12-29std: Stabilize the prelude moduleAlex Crichton-1/+1
This commit is an implementation of [RFC 503][rfc] which is a stabilization story for the prelude. Most of the RFC was directly applied, removing reexports. Some reexports are kept around, however: * `range` remains until range syntax has landed to reduce churn. * `Path` and `GenericPath` remain until path reform lands. This is done to prevent many imports of `GenericPath` which will soon be removed. * All `io` traits remain until I/O reform lands so imports can be rewritten all at once to `std::io::prelude::*`. This is a breaking change because many prelude reexports have been removed, and the RFC can be consulted for the exact list of removed reexports, as well as to find the locations of where to import them. Now that we have an overloaded comparison (`==`) operator, and that `Vec`/`String` deref to `[T]`/`str` on method calls, many `as_slice()`/`as_mut_slice()`/`to_string()` calls have become redundant. This patch removes them. These were the most common patterns: - `assert_eq(test_output.as_slice(), "ground truth")` -> `assert_eq(test_output, "ground truth")` - `assert_eq(test_output, "ground truth".to_string())` -> `assert_eq(test_output, "ground truth")` - `vec.as_mut_slice().sort()` -> `vec.sort()` - `vec.as_slice().slice(from, to)` -> `vec.slice(from_to)` --- Note that e.g. `a_string.push_str(b_string.as_slice())` has been left untouched in this PR, since we first need to settle down whether we want to favor the `&*b_string` or the `b_string[]` notation. The trait has an obvious, sensible implementation directly on vectors so the MemWriter wrapper is unnecessary. This will halt the trend towards providing all of the vector methods on MemWriter along with eliminating the noise caused by conversions between the two types. It also provides the useful default Writer methods on Vec<u8>. After the type is removed and code has been migrated, it would make sense to add a new implementation of MemWriter with seeking support. The simple use cases can be covered with vectors alone, and ones with the need for seeks can use a new MemWriter implementation.

This commit renames a number of extension traits for slices and string slices, now that they have been refactored for DST. In many cases, multiple extension traits could now be consolidated. Further consolidation will be possible with generalized where clauses. The renamings are consistent with the [new `-Prelude` suffix](https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/344). There are probably a few more candidates for being renamed this way, but that is left for API stabilization of the relevant modules. As part of the collections reform RFC, this commit removes all collections traits in favor of inherent methods on collections themselves. All methods should continue to be available on all collections. This is a breaking change with all of the collections traits being removed and no longer being in the prelude. In order to update old code you should move the trait implementations to inherent implementations directly on the type itself. Note that some traits had default methods which will also need to be implemented to maintain backwards compatibility. [breaking-change] cc #18424

https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/221 The current terminology of "task failure" often causes problems when writing or speaking about code. You often want to talk about the possibility of an operation that returns a Result "failing", but cannot because of the ambiguity with task failure. Instead, you have to speak of "the failing case" or "when the operation does not succeed" or other circumlocutions. Likewise, we use a "Failure" header in rustdoc to describe when operations may fail the task, but it would often be helpful to separate out a section describing the "Err-producing" case. We have been steadily moving away from task failure and toward Result as an error-handling mechanism, so we should optimize our terminology accordingly: Result-producing functions should be easy to describe. To update your code, rename any call to `fail!` to `panic!` instead. Assuming you have not created your own macro named `panic!`, this will work on UNIX based systems: grep -lZR 'fail!' . | xargs -0 -l sed -i -e 's/fail!/panic!/g' You can of course also do this by hand. Also add #[test] where it was missing. libstd/num: introduce a helper function to effectively remove invocations of a deprecated method. libstd/path and rand: remove invocations of deprecated methods and superfluous "use". libstd/task and libsync/comm: "allow(deprecated)" for testing a deprecated method itself. libsync/deque: remove superfluous "unsafe". libsync/mutex and once: names of static variables should be in upper case. libterm: introduce a helper function to effectively remove invocations of a deprecated method. We still see a few warnings about using obsoleted native::task::spawn() in the test modules for libsync. The src/etc/2014-06-rewrite-bytes-macros.py script automatically rewrites `bytes!()` invocations into byte string literals. Pass it filenames as arguments to generate a diff that you can inspect, or `--apply` followed by filenames to apply the changes in place. Diffs can be piped into `tip` or `pygmentize -l diff` for coloring.
